Austere Burn Care and Rehabilitation

Intended Audience | Surgeons, Nurses, Physical Therapists

This 2-day course is designed to provide training to enhance quality of care for burn patients and facilitate understanding of safe treatment for patients with moderate to severe burns. The principles outlined in this training can be used on burn patients with varying degrees of burn severity and is targeted at the highest level of care up to that of a burn ICU. The training is tailored to respond to burns in low resource settings, whether at a mission hospital or an Emergency Field Hospital. This course is targeted to provide hands on training to Surgeons, Nurses as well as Physical Therapists.

Helping Babies Survive

Intended Audience | Medical and Healthcare Professionals

Helping Babies Survive is an evidence-based, hands-on training program designed to reduce neonatal mortality in resource limited environments. Helping Babies Survive is divided into two components. Essential Newborn Care 1 incorporates Helping Babies Breathe, which teaches neonatal resuscitation skills, and care in the first 60 minutes of life. Essential Newborn Care 2 concentrates on newborn care from 60 minutes of life to discharge from the medical facility through the baby’s first month of life. Helping Babies Survive equips trainers with the skills and knowledge to teach doctors, nurses, midwives, and birth attendants evidence-based newborn care in countries with limited resources.

Intensive Hands-on Abdominal Ultrasound Seminar

Intended Audience | Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, and Physician Assistants

Would you like to scan the abdomen with confidence like a practicing sonographer? This immersive, all-day workshop is designed to build foundational abdominal ultrasound skills through guided, hands-on experience, ideal for those serving in mission settings.

This is not a passive course or lecture. It is a highly interactive workshop where participants spend the majority of the day scanning under direct mentorship with expert sonographers. Enrollment is intentionally limited to ensure maximum hands-on time, allowing you to actively develop the skills needed to evaluate the abdomen and identify significant abnormalities with confidence.

The workshop is offered on both Thursday and Friday, with each day limited to 24 participants, including physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants. Participants will commit to a full day of engagement in the workshop, with the opportunity to attend other conference lectures on the alternate day.

Due to the intensive, small-group format of this hands-on workshop, advance registration is required. Once capacity is reached, a waitlist will be opened.

Introduction to Disaster Response

Intended Audience | All Attendees

This session will focus on the fundamentals of disaster response and initial patient management and will serve as an indispensable orientation to those interested in learning more about the Samaritan’s Purse DART programs.

Objectives:

• To understand initial DART phases and communication structure
• To review the Emergency Medical Response System
• To discuss mandate and the DART mentality
• To gain a basic understanding of a Rapid Field Assessment

Low-Resource Clinic Skills Seminar

The Low-Resource Clinical Skills Seminar is a hands-on, station-based training designed to equip medical professionals with practical, adaptable skills for delivering effective care in austere and resource-constrained environments.

Whether refreshing existing competencies or learning new approaches tailored to low-resource settings, participants will engage in focused skill stations that strengthen clinical decision-making, promote safe improvisation, and optimize the use of limited resources in both routine and emergency scenarios.

Serving in Short Term Missions

Intended Audience | All Attendees

Are you interested in joining the mission field? Have questions about how to get there? This pre-conference offering will provide attendees the opportunity to hear from and ask questions of experienced missionaries from a variety of backgrounds: short term and long term, mission hospital and disaster relief. Attendees will gain practical tips for moving into a life of missions. 

Objectives:

• Become familiar with short term medical mission needs and opportunities.
• Be equipped and prepared to utilize medical skills on short-term mission assignments.
• Develop knowledge of the volunteer application, placement, and logistics processes.

SIGN Nail

Intended Audience | General and Orthopedic Surgeons

The SIGN System enables surgeons in low resource settings to treat long bone fractures with intramedullary nailing. This is the “gold standard” for treating severe bone fractures around the world, and SIGN makes it accessible to hospitals that do not have C-arms (fluoroscopy) or reliable electricity in the operating room. This two-hour session, taught by experienced missionary orthopedic surgeons, provides hands-on training in using the SIGN technique and is appropriate for general and orthopedic surgeons who volunteer at either mission hospitals or with the Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART).
